Toronto AES BulletinJune 1996Meeting Review |
Approximately 60 members and guests made the trek up to Rexdale, North of Toronto for a tour of Master's Workshop, one of the landmarks in Toronto's Audio Post Community. Master's Vice President and General Manager Mr. Bob Predovich began the tour by outlining the evolution of IMAX sound, and the role of Master's Workshop in this evolution. (See the June '96 Bulletin for highlights.)
Next we were treated to a demonstration of some recent projects for IMAX in Master's IMAX Mixing Theatre. Mixer, Tim Archer explained how he obtains five mix locations across the front three channels using Master's customized Neotek board, a customized panning joystick and sometimes Ambisonics. Because little or no location sound ends up in the final product (those IMAX cameras are noisy), Master's foley stage and ADR booths are also mainstays in the audio post production process. The result of Tim's attention to detail resulted in a very realistic experience. IMAX films tend not to be as "commercial" as other multi-channel formats, and will probably stay that way. However IMAX is now branching into other applications such as professional simulators, thrillride simulators and other multimedia where sound is a critical component.
Thanks to Martin Fraser for organizing this event.
