Last fall the Toronto International Film Festival decided to hold their gala screenings at Roy Thompson Hall. Setting up in a fan shape concert hall for multiple format surround sound systems was a major challenge. The results were a such spectacular success, that the Toronto International Film Festival is back at Roy Thompson Hall again this year.
To kick off the Toronto Section's 1996-97 season, Neil Muncy will lead us on a behind the scenes look at Roy Thompson Hall, showing us how the transformation was accomplished.
New this year behind the screen is a complement of speakers from EAW. There are three 2-ways and 2 subs to handle the L-C-R information. Around the main level of the hall are seven surrounds from EAW. Covering the upper levels and balconies are thirty-two PSB bi-poles. The speakers are driven by about 15 kilowatts of power. Surround formats supported include: Dolby Digital (AC-3), Sony's SDDS, DTS, and of course Dolby's analogue 4-2-4 Motion Picture Matrix.
As well, 65,000 square feet of black velour is strategically placed around the concert hall to bring the reverberation time down to Dolby specifications for a room this size. Come to Roy Thompson Hall Tuesday September 3rd, the day after Labour Day, to see and hear this remarkable sound system.
